Hello there.   This is Alan Rose, LAC, 4102790, guest at 107 MU, RAF Kasfareet, Sept.1953 - April 1955.   The airman standing with Robin (Bob, Frank) Donnelly, is John (Ginger) Dunne of Billet 83.   Also, I recognise three signatures on the Christmas menu - Peter Stenning, Stan (Scouse) Moses and Pete Gardiner.   I will contact you again soon with my photos of my time in this desert paradise!

Good pictures and comments as an excellent historic record of the times in the Suez Canal Zone. I only passed through with a short stay at RAF El Hamra on the way to Aden in 1952, and home in 1954. I have great respect to all the guys who manned the units in the Canal Zone.
Best wishes, Colin Williamson

Roy Scattergood here again.   This isnt strictly about Kas. - It was when i was at El- Hamra prior to making the long march down he Treaty Road to our new home.   One dinner time four of us mooched up to the airmans mess to be greeted by the Sgt I/c the cookhouse.   He said (and I think he was being serious)   "Weve got a real treat for you lads today, a choice of four different meat dishes.   Theres Corned beef cottage pie, corned beef fritters, corned beef hash or plain corned beef!!     The food was much better at Kas.   even tho I like corned beef.   All yje Best everyone   Roy S.

Mike Favell again. I have just discovered the 107MU blazer badge and it is now sewn nto my top pocket. This raises a question if anyone can answer it? My memory tells me that the CO during my time was Gp Cpt Head (1951-1953), I recall the rumour that he instigated the Water Buffalo for the insignia of 107 MU, can it be confirmed?
Anyway it feels pretty good to be wearing it after all this time.
Interesting that the older we become the deeper we get to delve into our past. Or is that just me?

Roy S.   here again   -   just saying thanks for adding the Last Post and Evening Hymn to the Site.   I also thought it was one of the best memories of my Service life - lying on my pit in the tent   and listening to the sound drifting over the desert from someones tranny!   - Getting all lyrical arent I !!     Anyway thanks once again   and All the Best     Cheers   Roy

Mike Favell inst. mech, Kasfareet August 51 to Oct. 53. Spent two years in the ASS Tentage Area - happy days, I was younger then. We were on short rations from October 51 to around Christmas, tho' I must admit we didn't seem to suffer too much from that. Still in touch with a couple of the lads, will be visiting the National Memorial Arboretum with one of them on the 10th October this year.

Hi everyone, Roy S. here again. (I did say there"d be no stopping me!)   Just having another shufti at this site and realised that the Chico I was on about was   talking to "Smudger Smith"   not Harry although it was on Harry"s page.   Also looking at photos of the Chariot Race brought back memories of when I was one of the "Horses" in the final race held.   WE WON   The prize was   one Egyptian Pound each!   Happy Days.     May I take this oportunity of wishing all of you a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.   Roy S, (Cas)

Alwyn,   Roy Scattergood here.   Walked to Kasfareet in 55!   (Only from across the Treaty road at El-Hamra - when that camp closed)   Just wish to say what a great site youve got going.   I stumbled across it while feeling my way around the web.   I"m rather new to this computer lark - thought it was about time I took   it up when I reached 73!   Must say I didnt know what I was missing.   Hope you got my Email   (Xmas greetings)   - Not sure if I get them right or not yet - just send and hope!.   Anyway All the best for Christmas and keep up the good work.   Roy S.   (aka Cas (thats another story!))

Eric Todd again!

Just visited the site again and I can't tell you how impressed I am with it. You are doing a brilliant job Alwyn. It brings back memories every time I look in.
I am sure I was on the same two trips to Cairo as some of the scenes are identical to what I remember. Also on Harry Parish's page The big native in Kasfareet High Street, I remember him well.

Keep up the good work mate.

Eric.

Hi Alwyn,
Eric Todd here again.   I have just been looking at your pictures, especially the one of Flt.Lt Don Blew and his family. Do you realise, the two children will be about 60 years old now? Why I thought of that I don't know, it just came to me out of the blue.

Eric.

Hi again Alwyn.

WOW! Just had another shufti at the site and I am amazed at how quickly it is growing. It is fabulous, well done mate. My previous posting at RAF Compton Bassett which was No 3 Radio School in Wiltshire was for two years and some of my friends from there have started a site RAF Compton Bassett, which is also coming along great. It is marvelous for refreshing our memories after over 50+ years. I am now getting more and more email every day from old friends and have stuck up friendships with people who were at the same camps as me but didn't know at the time. Keep up the good work.
Eric.

Thanks Al for forwarding your great Web-Site. I was at Kasfareet from June 54 until Jan 54 working in 2 PSCO Wing and lived in Billet 7. Your site and photos have brought back some amazing old memories of the old days and the good friends we made. I left the UK in 1960 for Australia and sailed thru the Canal enroute. I recall looking at Kasfareet when we were in the Bitter lakes with some fond memories. Like many others,I started off only thinking of ROTB and home but when the time came to go it was with very mixed feelings about leaving behind a really great bunch of guys. Thanks for the memories.

I've just been introduced to this site by Fritz Hilsden.   I'm Ray Maddox and was in EPAS from September '51 till February '54. Started off in billet 1 for a couple of weeks (Zac was` the bearer) then the rest of the time in billet 6. Went to Port Fouad in October '51 for a couple of months to work on Port Side nocks then back to 107. Several sites refer to the zone and to Kasfareet but I think this one is closest for me.   Great to see individuals pages. Well done Alwyn.
Keep it goimg, good luck, Ray Maddox

Hello Alwyn,

I was put in touch with this wonderful site of yours by Ray Penney.
Have not yet had full chance to read through all the details but I have already mailed you some photos of my time at 107 MU.
My name is Jack Garry and I arrived at No.2 PASCO Wing, April '53 as SAC (4086837) Clerk Org. I worked (if that's the word) in the PASCO Orderly Room along with Cpl Stan Stanning;LAC Pearce; Williams; Haley and LACW Preston.
Keeping the Wing Co's wall charts up to date and supervising the cleaning of his car, were some of the very important duties I had!
Some time early in 1954, I was transferred to SHQ as Cpl. Clerk to the Adjutants office until demob Oct.1954. The C.O was Grp. Capt.P.H.Stibbs. I cannot recall the names of LAC and LACW staff I worked with.
I would very much like to make contact with both Eric Todd and Don Maddockswho were both in SHQ around my time.
The comments on your site have certainly jogged the memory. At this moment I am trying to locate where my Billet No.7 would have been in 53/54 from the map of 1947. The golf course would have been adjacent to the C.O's house along the perimeter fence etc etc.I will sort and forward some more photos in the near future.
My email is   jgarry2@toucansurf.com

Thanks again for all your time and effort in this site.

Jack Garry

Hi Alwyn.

Eric Todd here. It is a bitter cold evening here and I thought I would get warmed up visiting Kasfareet. I spent about an hour on the site and great memories came flooding back when I read about the Cairo and Nile Delta trips. I was on both of those trips in 1955 and remember the Belly Dancer very well. Also the views of the Pyramids and Mosque, etc. Plus those school kids going into the Mosque.

Audrey and I took our Grand-daughter to Cyprus about 10 years ago and we went on a 3 day/2 night, mini-cruise to Cairo and visited the Mosque and Museum but when we got to the Pyramids we could get off the coach as there was a sand storm and it was practically impossible to see them. The Mosque and Museuim hadn't changed much in all those years and the trams were still in operation nearby and still pained green and cream. Of course no Mediteranian city would be complete without the street traders pestering.

Keep in touch, this is developing into a brilliant site. Well done, Mate.

Eric.

I remember one winter night (still hot but we had to wear U.K.uniform and Greatcoat on night guard duty.It was 1954 and I was patrolling the perimeter alongside the Water Filtration Plant, around 02.00.Remember the static searchlight which we had to adjust the carbon? I had just adjusted it and was walking along in a bit of dream when I spotted somebody coming through the fence, I gave the usal challenge three times and was about to open fire when I realised it was my shadow being cast on the fence due to brightness of that ruddy light. My heart certainly skipped a beat that morning. I often wonder what would have happened if I hadn't come to my senses. I would probably been certified mental for trying to shoot myself. I can certainly laugh about it now.

Hi. I was at Kasfareet from June 1953 to December 1955 after having been in the service since September 1950.At Kasfareet I served my full tour in the Station Orderly Room as P.O.R. Clerk for about two years and then as Cpl. Clerk (G.D) i/c Documents for the remainder of my time there.
I served a total of five years and seven months in RAF.
I made some good friends at both my main stations and am pleased to say I am still in touch with some of them and also with several qwho were at both statuion but we never actually met. It is great to be able to contact people so easily on the internet and by telephone. What a joy it would have been if these forms of communication had been so available during our service days. Remember the old Air Letters and the long awaited sea mail.
I used to like to go to Kasfareet Lido and watch the Bods lifting sacks of mail off the Sunderland Flying Boat. One day they lost a sack full into the canal.
I am very impressed with this site and hope it continues to grow. I have mailed some photos of Kasfareet which I hope can be inserted.
Best wishes for 2008 and the future to all. Let's hope this year brings Peace to the World.

Hello there, great to find your site. I was led to it by Eric Todd formerly of 107MU SHQ Kasfareet. Ah Kasfareet.... 107MU...it is amazing that almost 50 years on, the place and the memories come flooding back. I was in SHQ Kasfareet too, in the P1&P2 Office, which was next door to the office of the C.O. Group Captain W.M. King.   To say that I enjoyed my time there, would be a bit of an overstatement, however I made enough good friends, and had some amazing laughs that I guess there is a soft spot for the place, forever in my heart.. I was there until the final closing moments of the Unit, when the Egyptian Army took over. I was then
shipped to Cyprus, and was involved, to a certain extent, with the Suez Campaign. The result of that was to have my National Service extended by 3 months..I was really happy about that!. Well I must say you have provided a great site, and it has made me wonder   if there could be a re-union of the Unit sometime What do you think?
